Title of Study: Mapping of Brain Functions (IRB #00-1425)

WHAT IS THIS STUDY ABOUT?

The purpose of this research study is to learn about how the brain processes information and to see if there are differences between those who are healthy, those with chronic schizophrenia, recent onset schizophrenia, and those who have a first degree relative with psychosis.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THIS STUDY?

If you decide to participate, you will be one of approximately 200 subjects in this research study. During the course of this study, you will participate in 4 sessions: a screening session, a cognitive evaluation session, an electrophysiological (EEG) recording session, and an MRI session. All sessions can be scheduled on separate days.

WILL I BE PAID FOR PARTICIPATING?

Payment is as follows:
Screening $0
Clinical Interview $30
Neurocognitive evaluation $30
EEG $30
MRI $20 per hour, usually a total of $40

You may only be asked to participate in some of these sessions

Additionally, you may be asked to participate in additional EEG and MRI imaging sessions. If you are willing to do so, you will be reimbursed an additional $30 for each ERP session, and an additional $20 per hour for each MRI session you participate in.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I CAN PARTICIPATE?

You may participate in this study if you are/have:

  • 16-45 years old
  • A diagnosis of schizophrenia, or schizophrenia-spectrum illness
  • OR

    have a first degree relative diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum illness

    OR

    have neither a diagnosis of schizophrenia nor a first degree relative with a schizophrenia-spectrum illness

  • Able to consent to the study

ARE THERE ANY REASONS YOU SHOULD NOT PARTICIPATE?

You should not participate in this study if you are/have:

  • Any foreign metal objects or implants in your body
  • A personal, and/or family, history of neurologic or neurodegenerative disorder
  • A learning disability
  • A female and you are pregnant or you are unwilling to take a pregnancy test
  • A substance abuse disorder and have abused substances within 1 month of entry into study
